Sharing Jesus’ money

“Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above…”   James 1:17

Talking about money and giving can be a difficult conversation. But Jesus knew the importance of giving, which is why he talked so much about money. Of the 38 parables he told, 16 are about money and possessions. Jesus knew that money can be an idol that robs us of the trust and peace that come from loving, unconditional giving. Not much has changed since Jesus’ time. In today’s world, we consider those who have amassed great wealth and material possessions as supreme examples of success and achievement.   We live with the conviction that what we have is ours to do what we want.

However, Christian faith shows us that everything we have has been given to us by God.  Therefore, living faithfully is about being stewards–caretakers–of the money, time, and gifts that God gives us, for the sake of blessing the world God has created and saved through Jesus Christ.  Our money is really Jesus’ money, and we are called to share what we have so that all people will know the love and care of Christ.
